Thumbs up Central Market at Westgate

I frequent the Central Market in the Ben White and Westgate area and I have mostly good things to say about it.

A large reason why I go there is the diversity of the selection in comparison to the regular HEB by my house. I like to be able to buy quality where it counts, and Central Market fulfills that.

In the meat section you get to choose your cut, and modify it into smaller portions (since I am buying for one), or even thinner if you want. They have a wide selection of sausages ranging from chicken, to pork, to breakfast varieties, and a vast array of pre-marinated chicken breasts.

The bakery has actual real bread. You know, the kind that isn't a rectangle, lasts a few days, isn't loaded to the gills with sugar and other crap, and has flavor! I highly recommend the Campagne, Rye, and Bavarian styles. They also have a dark Pumpernickel bread, but I haven't tried it yet. Usually the dark breads are awesome with cheese, or some light butter and cinnamon.

It's the only place in town that has cannolis that I know of. They aren't true Italian sinfully-good cannolis, but they suffice.

The beer selection at Central Market is unrivaled in South Austin. I usually go with Duvel, Chimay Red, or some of the German offerings. You can usually snag some of the rarer DogFish Head seasonal brews as well.

The only real complaint I have is the entire hidden sections paths. You need GPS to migrate the store the first time you go there. I know they are trying to get around the "Grocery Box" feel, but some of the passages are too narrow for two carts. Austin has enough traffic jams, I don't need one at the store either.

So if you are at Central Market and see a guy with nothing but steaks, beer, and bread in his hand basket be sure to say hi, haha.

My next complaint is it isn't within walking distance.
